Can Cannabidiol (CBD) help alleviate arthritis pain?
Cannabidiol (CBD) and Arthritis Pain
It’s a fact that many Americans today face chronic pain due to Arthritis. The statistics are staggering. Some reports indicate that up to 350 million people worldwide suffer from arthritis, including 40 million in the United States.
Some common symptoms of arthritis are joint stiffness, joint swelling, sharp pain, reduced range of motion, deformity of joint, and many more. Arthritis can be diagnosed in several forms and can affect men and women across many age ranges.
Let’s first identify two of the most common forms of arthritis below:
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) : In this form of arthritis, a person’s immune system actively begins attacking the joints causing chronic inflammation. This is most common in areas such as the hands and the feet and can lead to symptoms such as swollen joints and pain.
Osteoarthritis (OA): Is a condition causing degeneration in the joint cartilage and bones leading to stiffness & pain. This most often occurs in the hips, thumb joints, and knees.
CBD for Arthritis Pain
Some initial studies on animals suggest that CBD oil may be effective in relieving the inflammatory pain associated with arthritis. The cannabidiol (CBD) compound naturally contains high levels of anti-inflammatory properties. Some recent studies show positive indicators around this subject, but more studies and FDA research will need to be conducted before any substantiated conclusions can be made.
A 2011 study found that CBD helped alter the way pain receptors responded to stimuli in rats.
A 2014 review of existing research related to CBD research on animals suggests that it may provide treatment and benefits for Osteoarthritis.
A 2016 study concluded that a topical application of CBD may help reduce inflammation and symptoms associated with arthritis.
A 2017 study found that the symptoms associated with Osteoarthritis joint pain may be alleviated by CBD.
